Building Vibrant Sierra Communities: A Commercial and Mixed Use Handbook was designed as a reference for communities that want an integrated approach to tackling population growth, affordable housing, community identity, economic revitalization, and open space preservation. The document explores the history of commercial and mixed use development in the Sierra Nevada and analyzes common characteristics of the Sierra’s historic town patterns and how CMU emerged from these patterns. It also explains the tools, guidelines and standards that can be used or modified to set the future direction of commercial districts and presents prototype commercial districts with mixed use design solutions for each. As project manager, Darin was responsible for defining the place types and determining and researching the case studies and creating the unique place type approach that is currently being adopted by many municipalities, state and federal agencies.
